2014: The Year of Relevance

Conference%20Room_0Very interesting article on the Enterprise CIO Forum by E.G. Hadhan. See below for a quick summary.

“New Style of IT will drive enterprises to be relevant in 2014”

The market and social dynamics are such that the absence of clearly visible relevance can start a slow but steady erosion of the related entity. The need to be relevant is not just to gain a competitive edge. Instead, it’s the minimum requirement to stay in the game. Not being relevant can have serious implications, such as CIOs becoming extinct!

There are multiple dimensions to relevance.

1. Relevance to the customer

2. Relevance to the business

3. Relevance of the role

4. Relevance of content

5. Relevance of technology

I would argue that none of these items are new, although some may have recently become more important given the changes brought on by Cloud, Mobility, Big Data etc. A CIO, along with many other C-level positions must always be seen as being relevant, if they are not then their days are probably numbered.
