Guidelines for “IT Effectiveness” | Joe Topinka

He provides some guidelines to ensure that IT is contributing to the advancement of their organization’s strategic goals and objectives.


  1. They proactively involve IT Business Partners in the strategic planning process.
  2. They make sure their IT Business Partners are meeting regularly with external customers.
  3. They make sure there is an investment vetting process that connects IT investments to strategic plans on an ongoing bases.
  4. They make sure that investments either drive top or bottom-line benefits, and that metrics are in place that measure investment success.

Joe is spot on, there should be no such things as IT projects, only business projects with IT content. That is achieved thru a close working relationship and strong alignment with business goals.
